The shine project
Hi All,
Welcome to The Shine Project.
THIS PROJECT WAS INSPIRED BY MANY FORCES, SOME POSITIVE AND SOME NEGATIVE. IT WAS CERTAINLY INSPIRED BY AN ARTICLE BY ANN FRIEDMAN, IN WHICH SHE and aminatou sow, COINED THE PHRASE “SHINE THEORY,” AS WELL AS BY A HUFFINGTON POST ARTICLE THAT DETAILED THE STRATEGIES THE WOMEN AT THE WHITE HOUSE DEVELOPED FOR CHAMPIONING ONE ANOTHER IN MEETINGS WITH THEIR MALE COUNTERPARTS.
After reading the piece about the women at The White House, I started to think more seriously about how the women I knew (and didn’t) could become advocates for each other. And how powerful it could be if they did. Events like the Million Mom March, and Israeli and Palestinian Women pulling together to unify and protest for peace (and the many other beautiful outcomes from the deep friendships and mentorships between these women) made me desperately want to create a platform, a digital space, where we could help each other capture this beautiful energy. A platform to help support and ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER.
So To put it simply, here's the idea for The Shine Project:
Let’s recognize each other. let's help each other, and the women in our lives, Shine. Let’s work together to build this platform so women can highlight one another. Let’s set an example for women and young girls that supporting one another doesn't take away opportunities -- it creates opportunities for all of us.
The idea is that simple. Yet it feels very powerful to me.
